Wall Racing Round 19: Tokei RC edges Hokuto

Rain through the afternoon had raised concerns about the wall surface, but it stopped an hour before the start and the round began on time. Kameido Second Wall dried quickly, as it tends to, and friction was reported near normal from midway through the second leg.

Hokuto controlled the opening, taking the early consecutive holds to lead at six tiers, one chain through the middle phase, while Tokei RC endured at four tiers, two chains. The match turned in the third leg. Rui Migiwajima, 17, now established in the third-leg role, reached the eighth tier — her season's best — off a late move that brought a roar from the far-bank stands, then stretched the score to six tiers, three chains to settle it. Hers is only the fourth eighth-tier of the league season.

"The wall isn't yesterday's wall — especially after rain," she said afterward. "You just make friends with today's wall." Of the eighth tier: "It was quiet up there. When the sound thins out, your hands stop hesitating." A monthly MVP award has never gone to a teenager; the youngest-ever honor is now a realistic prospect.

Hokuto's captain: "Through the middle it went exactly as we planned. But that late move — nobody on our side has it. Before the frustration, I want to sort out what I just watched."

What separated the clubs, people around both benches agree, was the reading of a wall after rain. Kameido Second dries from its south face, where the river wind strikes. Hokuto avoided the slow-drying northerly lanes and attacked early — exactly as planned, and it worked. But by the third leg the whole face had dried, and the high-tier lanes that had been closed all evening opened. Migiwajima's eighth tier was the first move played on an opened lane.

"A wall after rain becomes a different wall by the hour," a Tokei RC coach revealed. "Conceding the early holds was priced in. The calculation was that the wall would be ready exactly when the third leg began." Hokuto's coach conceded the point: "The reading was even. The difference was having the one athlete who could spend an opened lane in a single move."

Tokei RC holds first place on 44 points, now five clear of second-placed Naniwa WC. "Three straight wins is the club's strength, but tonight belonged to Migiwajima," the manager said. "Still, we are not building a team that leans on her. The four-two that the first and second legs endured — that was the foundation of the eighth tier."

The crowd of about 7,400 was the season's largest at home, with school uniforms conspicuous in the stands ahead of the student federation's autumn qualifiers. Round 20 is September 4, away at Naniwa — a first-place showdown that may shape the season.
