First business suspension ordered over "attunement development" scheme

The suspended firm, an educational-materials company in the city, combined video courses in a breathing method it called "Breath of the Shore" with in-person seminars, advertising an "awakening guarantee" — permeation attunement in 90 days or a full refund. It took in roughly 800 million yen over three years, with an entry course at 80,000 yen and top-tier seminars costing up to 1.2 million yen.

According to the Consumer Affairs Agency, the company fabricated testimonials from "awakened" students and obstructed cancellations, telling refund-seekers that "interrupting now, just as your signs of attunement are emerging, will close the window for good." Despite the guarantee, no full refund was ever confirmed to have been paid. Purchasers number about 8,000, an estimated thirty percent of them minors — often signed up by parents hoping their child would be certified as Yuragi-sensitive.

Permeation attunement — the reputed ability to sense a Yuragi before it occurs — is formally recognized through the city's registration system, which currently lists only a few dozen certified individuals. The TDA restated its position on Friday: "The conditions for emergence are not understood. There is no scientific basis for any 'development method' claiming the ability can be acquired through training or materials."

A victims' legal team received some 300 inquiries within half a day of the announcement. "The typical victim is a parent who wants to do something for their child," one of its lawyers said. "This is a business that puts a price tag on the feeling that 'my child might be special.' The malice is considerable."

This paper spoke with the family of a former student. An office worker, 44, from the Joto district signed her son up two years ago, when he was in his first year of junior high, paying two million yen in all for the entry course and an advanced seminar. What prompted her was something the boy said: that on days before a Yuragi, "the back of my ears seems to ring." "I panicked — if he was genuinely sensitive, I had to develop it quickly. At every session they told us 'the signs are emerging.' Looking back, not once did they point out a sign that had failed to emerge."

Late in the course, the boy began refusing to go. "They kept telling him he couldn't awaken because his breathing was too shallow, until he cried that he no longer knew how to breathe. Before any attunement, they broke his breathing." When she asked to cancel, the instructor told her: "Stop now, and the ringing in his ears will never return." She said: "The person I can least forgive is myself, for putting a price on my son's ears."

Meanwhile, successor accounts appeared on social media the same day, claiming "the real method is different" and "only the fake was shut down" — some purporting to be former instructors of the company. The agency warns consumers to be wary of identical pitches under new names: "The moment you hear 'guarantee' or 'certification,' doubt first."

A folklorist who studies the private occult culture notes: "Attunement development is a stock scheme that has recurred under different names for thirty years. It is hard to eradicate precisely because the Yuragi-sensitive genuinely exist. In a world where the real thing exists, the counterfeit never disappears."
