Tomoshibi Animation Unveils New Series 'The Lantern-Keeper' — Inspired, in Part, by This Paper's Own Survey Reporting

Tomoshibi Animation held a press conference at its Kyobashi headquarters on the 10th to announce a new original television series, "The Lantern-Keeper," premiering next spring. The setting is a fictionalized version of the stone high-rise city known to viewers as "the Lit City" — the observation target the Dimensional Survey Division calls Lineage 7. As previously reported, this lineage, observed longer than any other stable window, has yielded three years of detailed records, including residents lighting lanterns through a procedure the Division provisionally calls "the rite," performed by placing a hand into a wall recess.

Director Kureha, speaking at the event, said, "The more you read the observation materials on the Lit City, the more the texture of that city's daily life comes through. But I want to say clearly, up front, that this is not an observation record — it is a complete work of fiction." The story follows a boy inheriting his family's generations-old duty of lighting lanterns; the mechanics of "the rite" and the city's institutions are, Kureha said, largely imagined, built out from publicly released observation materials. "We have no idea what society actually exists over there," the director said. "The one thing we held to was never pretending to know what we don't."

Kureha revealed the project's origin: "Our staff read this paper's Dimensional Survey section every morning as a matter of habit. One article quoted a line from a window keeper's log — 'I watch their morning' — and that line, unchanged, became the first line of our pitch document." Rin Toda, this paper's Dimensional Survey reporter, said when asked, "Honestly, I was surprised to hear my own article had become the doorway into an anime. I want the keepers to hear about this too."

The TDA's Dimensional Survey Division said it had been consulted on the project in advance and had approved the use of already-published observation material. "Commercial use of observation material goes through an application and review process," an official said. "In this case, we confirmed that nothing beyond the publicly released scope was used," adding only that "the Division is not in a position to comment on the content of the work itself." As previously reported, merchandise vendors have made similar inquiries in the past, and the Division says the official handling of such imagery remains under review.

The long-standing ethical debate over the Survey section — whether continued observation is appropriate — has, as previously reported, occasionally extended to questions of whether fictionalizing the far side is appropriate at all. Kureha addressed this directly: "I think turning it into fiction might actually let more people share in the way of engaging with something you don't understand — enjoying it without pretending to understand it." A producer at Tomoshibi Animation who joined the event added, "We're not trying to turn the far side into entertainment for its own sake. If anything, we want to bring the appeal of that reporting to people who've never read the Survey section."

"The Lantern-Keeper" is planned for twelve episodes, airing in TCT's Saturday evening slot from next spring. Casting for the lead role will be announced soon, and no theme song has yet been decided. Among the reporters at the venue was a student fan who said she keeps a file of clippings from the Survey section. "I never imagined a window keeper's log would become an anime," she said, her voice brightening. "I can't wait for it to air."
