Yume, On Location: Stairs Are Harder Than I Thought

The sixth installment of 'Yume, On Location': Yume shows up pumped to livestream the Tower Running meet, only to end up out of breath as a mere spectator.

Hearing that the Tower Running meet was just people climbing stairs over and over, I'll admit I got a little cocky and figured it wouldn't make for great livestream footage. Apparently a Fire Bureau runner named Koda won, and I wanted to get the closest possible shot, so I climbed along with the racers for part of the way myself. I was done by around the 15th floor. Apparently the runners went all the way to the 42nd. That makes no sense to me.

While I was collapsed on a landing, a veteran runner named Tarumi breezed right past me, cool as anything, and asked, "You okay?" I was not okay at all. My stream comments filled up with "what are YOU running for," which was too accurate to argue with.

I managed to get a word from Koda, the winner, when she came back down, and she told me she'd been "out of breath by the third floor six months ago" — which means she used to be way more impressive than I am right now. Out of spite, I signed up for a gym membership. Whether I actually go is a separate question.

On the way home, I heard that applications for Tokiwado's robot custody service have doubled this month alone, and even though it has nothing to do with stairs, I nearly teared up a little. Today's outing mostly just reconfirmed how little stamina I have, but I figure a round like that is allowed once in a while. Next time, I'm picking a story with no stairs in it.

Tower Running's 88th Meet: Rookie Seira Koda Takes Her First Win, Edging Veteran Daichi Tarumi by 0.8 Seconds

The monthly Tower Running meet — the 88th overall — in which competitors race up the stairwells of tall buildings, was held on the 25th at the 42-story Kyobashi HQ Tower. Seira Koda, 24, of the Fire Bureau team, took her first-ever win in 42 floors, 11 minutes 24 seconds, edging out Daichi Tarumi, 38, of the Tokei Tower Running Club — a five-time winner this season, as previously reported — by 0.8 seconds. A month after setting the meet's rookie record in September, the runner who once said she was 'out of breath by the third floor' now stands atop this season's field.

Applications for Robot 'Perpetual Custody' Double This Month, Boosted by New 'Its Own Preference' Box

Applications for 'perpetual custody' — the paid service that keeps retired companion robots indefinitely — have roughly doubled their usual pace this month, this paper learned on the 25th through interviews with Tokiwado, the Kyobashi shop that runs the service. The previously reported (23rd) extension of symbiotic robots' standard service life and the new box for recording a robot's 'own preference' appear to be driving the increase.
