Yume, On Location: The Day the Drums Layered, I Teared Up a Little

The seventh installment of 'Yume, On Location': Yume heads out to stream the joint drumming performance in Fukagawa and forgets to press record because she's too busy watching.

Column "Yume, On Location," episode 7.

I went to Fukagawa Central Plaza all pumped to stream the three-clan drumming, tripod and everything, and forgot the tripod existed about a minute in. The dog-lineage drums hit first and that alone gave me chills, but the second the bear lineage's low tones layered in, the grandma standing next to me whispered "it came," just like that, and I nearly lost it right there.

By the time the fox lineage's offbeat rhythm came in last, I honestly couldn't follow the beat anymore, but not following it felt good, and next thing I knew my phone screen had gone dark. Never recorded. Someone in my comments called me out — "the streamer's the one who got the most out of it, lol" — and I couldn't exactly argue.

Afterward I heard the dog-lineage chairman say something like "it's more interesting to layer than to compete," and I thought, honestly, that applies to my own streams too. Content that overlaps with someone else's does better than content that just competes with it. Might be overthinking it.

The fried-food stall sold out too — I was still in line for the baked sweets when the whole performance ended. Tripod stays up next time, for real. Writing this today, I just found out Edagawa paid back its debt to Toyosu in the tail-tag rematch — kind of annoyed I didn't go catch that one too. No more stairs, though. Never again.

Three Drumbeats, Layered for the First Time — Fukagawa Park Hosts First Joint Performance by Three Clans

Three drumbeats, layered together for the first time. Fukagawa's dog- and bear-lineage neighborhood associations and Kameido's fox-lineage association, who have been rehearsing jointly for next year's previously reported 'Three Clans Autumn Festival,' gave the public its first look at their joint routine at Fukagawa Central Plaza on the 31st, drawing roughly 300 onlookers. It was the first public performance since the previously reported shift from a 'drum-off' format to one where the three rhythms layer together.
