Window 2's 'Sea of Mechanisms' Reopens After Eight Days — One Tower Has Become Two

Stable Window 2, "the Sea of Mechanisms," at Warehouse No. 4 in the bay district (Lineage 19), opened at 2:47 a.m. on the 17th — eight days after it closed at 9:15 p.m. on the 9th, previously reported. The window itself was checked regularly during the closure, the Dimensional Survey Division said, but whether or when it would open again was, as with every window, entirely unpredictable; this time the keeper on night duty simply happened to notice.
The most striking change concerned the previously reported record-scale tower structure. Having ended the 53-hour opening roughly 20 percent shorter than its peak height, the once-single tower was this time observed as two towers of nearly equal height. "We can't tell, from this observation alone, whether the original one split, or a new one formed nearby and simply appears to stand beside it," a Division official said. "All we can do is watch whether there are still two the next time it opens."
As previously reported, the metallic "call-and-response" sound attributed to the self-repairing machine collective had shown a new periodicity as of the 9th's opening. This time, two distinct rhythms were recorded, apparently coming from each of the two towers. "There were moments the two sounds seemed to overlap," a Division official said. "Whether that's simply additive, or whether the two towers behave like separate individuals, we don't know either." The recording is now the third such sample sent out for analysis by outside research institutions.
The keeper on duty wrote in the log: "The instant the tower looked like two, I found myself recounting." According to the Division, no human-like figures have ever been recorded at the Sea of Mechanisms, making it the only one of the five lineages where no "inhabitants" have even been inferred to exist. None were seen near the structures this time either.
This opening closed at 3:39 a.m., lasting 52 minutes — a sharp contrast to the previously reported 53-hour record. The Division was careful not to read significance into the difference: "Treating 'short' as small and 'long' as large is just our own logic being applied to it," an official said, reiterating that opening duration is not linked to the importance of what is observed.
This sequence of events at Window 2 is expected to be added to the agenda of the outside expert panel due to hold its first meeting in November, previously reported, alongside the long observations already listed for Windows 4 and 5. "A window that was closed a long time reopens looking different from how it looked when it closed," the Division said. "That, too, is something you'd never notice without continuing to watch."
Merchandise vendors have inquired about products themed on the Sea of Mechanisms' towers, following the previously reported interest in "Lit City" postcards. "The Sea of Mechanisms is popular precisely because no people are visible — it reads as pure form," a Division official said. "But with no way to know what the towers will look like next, we've told vendors it's premature to commit any one shape to merchandise."
This reporter noted: "The tower didn't shrink or collapse — it appeared to have grown. Whether that's good or bad isn't ours to decide. One more thing we don't understand: for this beat, that's harvest enough." When the window will open again remains, as always, entirely unknown.
