Window 5, 'the Sword Country': Voice-Like Sound Recorded During Opening for the First Time

Window 5, "the Sword Country," opened at 2:58 a.m. on the 30th and closed 41 minutes later at 3:39 a.m. According to the Dimensional Survey Division, around 3:20 a.m., partway through the opening, a short, inflected sound was captured on the window room's microphone for roughly three seconds, mixed in with the previously reported market bustle and cart noise. The window keeper on duty wrote in the log that it "sounded almost like a street vendor's call, or maybe a line of a song."

Window 5 has previously yielded market noise, cart wheels, and the sound of small objects — a clasp, a braided cord — falling into the window room, but always as either a single bump or continuous crowd noise. The division's audio staff said today's sound differs in that "its pitch rises and falls in a regular pattern," and that its waveform matches neither a mechanical repeating sound nor the ordinary hum of the crowd. They stressed that the frequency range bears no resemblance to the "call-and-response" metallic tones previously reported at Window 2, "the Sea of Mechanisms," and said there is no basis for linking the two.

The division reiterated its standing position that "there is no evidence the other side is aware of us." A staff member said, "We can't rule out that this came from some sound-producing organism, but it would be premature to call it a human voice just because it stood out from the crowd noise," deliberately avoiding the word "communication." The recording will be sent for analysis to an outside research institute, though — as with the Window 2 audio analysis previously reported — results are expected to take several months.

As previously reported, Window 5 has repeatedly shown a procession carrying tokens resembling the "ceremony" tablets of Lineage 7, "the Lit City," and the relationship between the two lineages has been kept as an open question. On today's recording, a division staff member said, "We've never captured an actual human voice at the Lit City to compare this against. There isn't even a basis for comparison yet," declining to rush toward any connection. Combined with the previously reported "unidentified" classification of Window 5's two recovered drift objects, one window keeper described it as "a window where the unknowns just keep stacking up."

As previously reported, the outside advisory panel (to be chaired by Etsuko Kajiura) is set to hold its first meeting in early November, with the splitting towers at Window 2, the boundary approach by the "Watcher" at Window 3, and the settlement's migration at Window 4 already slated as agenda items. The division said today's voice-like recording will be added as a fourth. Kajiura, through the division, offered the view that "there is still a wide gap between the fact of having heard something and any interpretation of what was heard" — consistent with her previously reported stance that the panel exists "to avoid rushing toward conclusions."

The morning forecast on the 30th had called Window 5 "likely closed," but it opened before dawn regardless — a reminder that the accuracy of the opening forecasts themselves remains an ongoing subject of review for the division.
