Fukagawa Drift Object: Points Finalized Ahead of the 16th Review Board — 'Indefinite Storage' Now a Formal Agenda Item

Ahead of the Sept. 16 review board's decision on whether to open the sealed container that drifted ashore in Fukagawa, the Third Appraisal Center said the points for discussion have been narrowed to three: (1) the nature of the phenomenon in which the liquid's surface fails to shift when the container is tilted; (2) what the differing lettering styles across the three stamped markings say about whether they share a single origin; and (3) whether to open the container, and if so, how. "Nearly every question raised at the 12th's briefing fell under one of these three," an official said.

No new analytical findings were announced at the 12th's briefing, previously reported, which drew roughly 120 residents, but several of the questions raised concerned safety management should the container remain in indefinite storage. That input will be shared with the board as reference material.

As previously reported, leaving the container sealed in permanent storage would, if adopted, mark the first such policy for a quarantined drift object. The option has circulated informally within the board before, but the 16th's meeting will treat it as a formal agenda item for the first time. "This isn't a forum for rushing to a conclusion," the Center said. "But laying it out as a formal item at least gives the board the material it needs to decide."

Materials are due to be distributed to the Fukagawa neighborhood association by the day before the meeting. Its chairman said, "Some residents say they'd be relieved if it stays sealed. Others want it opened. Our association remains divided." The Center said it intends to keep briefing the community individually regardless of the outcome. Both the question of the lettering differences and the nature of the liquid's behavior remain, as previously reported, at the same "unexplained" level as before.
