School Wall Racing Semifinals: Toyosu Tech Edges Konan Academy for a 7th Straight Win, Faces Daiba Industrial in the Final

Two semifinal matches of school wall racing's autumn qualifiers were held on the morning of the 27th at the Kameido No. 2 Wall. As previously reported, the first pitted unbeaten Private Toyosu Tech against Private Konan Academy, the lone first-time entrant among this season's 62 debut schools to reach the semifinals. Both sides climbed tier for tier through the early going, staying roughly even up to the fifth tier. At the sixth tier, Konan Academy pulled ahead with four consecutive holds, briefly threatening an upset. In the closing stretch, Toyosu Tech reached the seventh tier and logged two holds there, edging out a narrow 7-tier-2-link to 6-tier-4-link win. Its unbeaten run since the opener stretched to seven matches.

Konan Academy's unnamed third-year captain said afterward, "We kept saying Toyosu Tech was the team we least wanted to face, and at the sixth tier it really felt within reach. It's frustrating, but I have no regrets." As previously reported, the club is young, one of 56 schools that took part in the Sept. 3 wall-familiarization session. "Next season we aim to climb one tier higher," the captain added. A Toyosu Tech team member, still catching his breath afterward, said, "We've talked about how the longer a streak goes, the more you fear this could be the match that ends it — today that fear was stronger than ever. Konan Academy's momentum was more than we expected." A reserve player beside him laughed ruefully, "Honestly, I thought it was over at the sixth tier."

The second match paired Private Daiba Industrial against Municipal Ariake High, both of whom, as previously reported, had advanced through the quarterfinals without drawing much attention — an "unflashy but steady climb." Daiba Industrial led by a narrow margin through much of the early going, held its lead through the fifth tier, then pushed ahead with three consecutive holds at the sixth to win 6-tier-3-link to 5-tier-4-link. Daiba Industrial's captain said, "We've faced Ariake before in past autumn qualifiers, so we each know the other's hand well. 'Unflashy' is a word that stings a little, honestly." Ariake High's captain said, "Staying in it until the end reflects what we've built up this season. We didn't reach the final, but I feel good about where we stand heading into next year."

As previously reported, temporary spectator seating had grown from 200 to 400 seats by the third round; the federation expanded it further to roughly 500 for the semifinals, and it was full on the day. No injuries were reported, continuing the run since the previously reported mandatory safety briefings took effect. A federation official said, "This was likely the largest crowd we've drawn for a semifinal. We'd like to look at expanding further for the final."

The final will be held in November, again at the Kameido No. 2 Wall, as previously reported. "It'll be a final where Toyosu Tech's unbeaten record meets Daiba Industrial's underlying strength," the federation said. "We'll announce the date soon." Toyosu Tech's faculty adviser, already looking ahead, said, "We won today, but we'll need to raise our level again before the final, or Daiba Industrial won't be an easy out."

Konan Academy's resistance at the sixth tier will live on in the record only as the number "6-tier-4-link." But there was a real stretch of time when it looked as if Toyosu Tech's unbeaten run might actually end there. Even the "unflashy" match between Daiba Industrial and Ariake High carried a quiet intensity — enough that the word "frustrating" came out of the winning captain's mouth. A different kind of tension awaits at the Kameido No. 2 Wall when the final arrives.
