'Light-Bearer' Announces Supporting Cast — Newcomer Suzuna Aiuchi to Play the Lead's Partner
The supporting cast for the anime 'Light-Bearer,' whose lead role was previously reported as cast on October 25th, was announced on the 2nd. Suzuna Aiuchi, 22, in her second year as a voice actor, will play the lead's partner, and her first meeting with previously reported lead Hayate Ashihara, 24, was opened to the press the same day.
Toboshibi Animation announced the supporting cast on the 2nd for its upcoming anime "Light-Bearer," set to air on TCT next spring, previously reported on September 10th with the lead role cast on the 25th. Suzuna Aiuchi, 22, in her second year as a voice actor, was cast as the childhood friend who supports the lead — a boy who inherits, generation after generation, the work of lighting lamps. At the press event, Aiuchi said, "This is the first time I've been given a role this large, and honestly it still doesn't quite feel real. Reading the script, the weight of inheriting that light made me tear up a little."
The same day, her first meeting with previously reported lead Hayate Ashihara, 24, was opened to the press. Ashihara, who had previously revealed he used the Dimensional Survey pages as reference for the role, said, "Now that the partner role is cast, the performance has finally become something built by two people, instead of me shaping it alone." Aiuchi recalled, "The first time I heard Ashihara's voice in the recording booth, it felt like the boy in the script was already standing there." Director Kureha explained the casting: "We found Ashihara by looking for an ordinary-sized boy, but the childhood friend standing beside him needed just as ordinary a voice. What stood out in Aiuchi's audition was a rhythm of breathing that wasn't written into the stage directions at all."
As previously reported, the series has no direct connection to stable windows or outlander techniques — it is an entirely original work from Toboshibi Animation, centered on a boy who inherits the lamplighting trade across generations, with production now in full swing ahead of next spring's broadcast on TCT. The theme song, as previously reported on October 26th, will be performed by Yuki Shirase.
■ The Newcomer, Suzuna Aiuchi
Aiuchi, in her second year as a voice actor, has mostly played minor roles limited to a handful of episodes until now, her agency says. She auditioned as a longtime fan of Toboshibi Animation's earlier work, and after studying the script closely, analyzed the childhood-friend role herself as "one that supports the boy who inherits the light from the outside" — an interpretation the production credits for her casting. Aiuchi herself said plainly, "Before any joy at landing a big role, what weighs on me more right now is whether I can act well enough standing next to Ashihara without embarrassing myself."
■ The Mood on Set
A member of the writing staff at the first meeting recalled, "A silence that isn't written anywhere in the script naturally emerged between the two of them in their exchanges," and director Kureha said, "It's rare to feel this much promise at a first read-through." Ashihara, who previously said he drew on the Dimensional Survey pages to build his role, said, "Aiuchi's childhood-friend role feels like it's bringing the smell of everyday life into the world I imagined from those articles."
■ Toboshibi Animation's Lineage
Toboshibi Animation is known, as previously reported, as a studio with particular strength in outlander-technique productions, and many of its signature works have handled Yuragi-related subject matter. "Light-Bearer" has no direct connection to stable windows or outlander techniques, making it an unusual direction for the studio. A production staffer explained, "We judged that the act of inheriting a light, on its own, carries enough weight for a story, even without drawing windows or practitioners."
A few more supporting cast members are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Recording is set to move into full gear starting in December, and this paper will continue following the production's progress.
